RMG workers stage demo in capital

Readymade garment workers on Thursday morning staged a demonstration in the capital's Topkhana road area demanding a wage hike .

The workers staged a demonstration around 11am in front of the Minimum Wage Board office, demanding a minimum monthly wage of Tk8,000.

Sources said they staged the demonstration under the banners of different workers associations, including Garments Sramik Sangram Parishad and Garments Sromik Okkiya Forum.

Garments Sromik Okkiya Forum leader Moshtareffa Mishu said they would declare a blockade program if their demands are not met.

Meanwhile, the protesters also demanded compensation for the victims of the Rana Plaza and Tazreen Fashion tragedies.

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) is to place its fresh proposal on the minimum wage for the workers during the course of the day.

Earlier, BGMEA proposed an increase of Tk600, or 20% from the existing minimum wage of Tk3,000, per month.
