Jubo League leader beaten to death in Jessore

A Jubo League member was beaten to death, allegedly by opposition activists at Noapra in Abhaynagar upazila, Jessore, on Sunday, during the early hours of the first day of the 60-hour countrywide hartal, reported UNB.

The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain Shimul, 35, general secretary of the Noapara municipality unit of Jubo League. Officer-in-Charge of Abhaynagar police station Kazi Abdus Salek said when some 18-party activists were marching towards the upazila headquarters from Noapara Bazar with a big procession, Shimul, along with some party activists, arrived on a microbus and tried to obstruct the pro-hartal procession. At one stage, several hundred hartal supporters started chasing Shimul and his party men. The opposition men caught Shimul and some of his associates when they took shelter in an abandoned building of Noapara highway police camp. The OC said the pro-hartal activists beat the Jubo League men mercilessly, leaving Shimul dead on the spot and five others injured. Local sources said Shimul was a terrorist and wanted in several cases.
