Foreign Minister Dipu Moni has urged the United Nations to send observers to monitor the upcoming general elections.
“We hope that the UN will continue being a trusted partner of Bangladesh in facilitating the preparations for the elections and sending observers to monitor the elections, as it had done before,” she said at a programme organised to observe United Nations Day at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital yesterday.
Her statement came amidst the backdrop of the conflicting political situation prevailing in the country where the major parties are sticking to their guns regarding the structure of the polls-time government.
The minister was hopeful that Bangladesh would maintain its record for holding free, fair, inclusive and credible elections in a conducive environment created through dialogue and understanding among all the major political parties.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made a phone calls to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the opposition Khaldea Zia in August.
Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, assistant secretary-general for Political Affairs at the UN visited Bangladesh in May at the request of Ban Ki-moon to urge the prominent political leaders to sit for constructive dialogue.
