Explosion in Chittagong; Shibir man held

Police detained one Islami Chhatra Shibir activist from Mirersarai upazila of Chittagong after an explosion in an Islamic school on Thursday evening.

This is the third explosion in the month in Chittagong; all of them taking place in an Islamic institution.

Police said the explosion took place at Talimul Quran Academy, located at Jamalpur area, around 6:15pm.

Joraiganj police station Officer-in-charge Iftekhar Hassan said one Shibir activist, Moktar, was arrested from the scene shortly after the incident.

“There were others, but they managed to flee,” he said adding that bomb-making materials, including live handmade bombs and gunpowder, were recovered from the blast site.

He said Moktar gave up information on the involvement of his brother Alamgir Hossain in the incident after primary interrogation.

Earlier on October 7, a big explosion rocked the Lalkhanbazar Madrassa, run by Hefazat-e Islam senior leader Mufti Izharul Islam, in Chittagong. A large quantity of bomb-making materials was recovered from scene.

Mufti Izhar’s son is currently arrested in the case filed over the incident.

On Wednesday, police detained a Jamaat activist after an explosion in his house. Bomb-making materials were also recovered from his Chittagong residence.

Law enforcers fear a rise in militant activities nearing the end of the current government rule.
