'Highest authority to decide on Anup Chetia'

Home Minister MK Alamgir said that the extradition of ULFA's General Secretary Anup Chetia was a decision pending with "the highest authority."

The comment was made on Wednesday after India and Bangladesh exchanged ratification instruments of the extradition treaty thereby putting it into effect.

After the programme, journalists asked the home minister if the first batch of extradition would include the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Anup Chetia.

In reply the minister said India assured Bangladesh to return killers of Bangabandhu if any were residing in their country. 

However, the extradition of Anup Chetia was a decision of Anup Chetia was a decision of the highest authority, he added.

Anup Chetia, general secretary of Assam's rebel group ULFA, has been locked up in Bangladehs for more than a decade.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran and senior home secretary CQK Mostak Ahmed signed and exchanged the ratification papers at the home ministry.
