Traffic on the Dhaka–Khulna highway remained disrupted for about an hour, as locals blocked the highway and formed a human chain at Goalondo Mokbuler Dokan Intersection of Rajbari sadar upazila on Sunday after a bus ran over a minor girl.
Officer-in-Charge of Goalondo police station Md Abul Basher said Reddi, five, of Juran Mondoler Para village, Goalondo upazila, was killed by a Khulna-bound Diganta Paribahan bus as she was crossing the road. The victim’s family members said she died on the spot.
Following the incident, locals attacked the staff of the bus, injuring Shaheen, 25, Akash, 26, and Rakibul, 28. Later, they maintained a human chain for an hour to demand punishment of the vehicle’s driver and address different issues regarding road accidents. Hundreds of vehicles were brought to a standstill on both sides of the highway by the demonstration.
Police rushed to the spot and tried to calm the agitated locals. They said the traffic situation became normal around 3:30pm, after they promised to arrest the driver responsible within a week.
Reddi’s body was sent to Rajbari Sadar Hospital Morgue for autopsy, and a case was filed with Goalondo police station.
