Another victim of Tuesday’s apartment fire in Gazipur that killed three members of a family last week died on Saturday after struggling for life for four days.
Following the deaths of his parents and sister, Rentu Saha, 22, who suffered burns to over half his body, succumbed to his injuries at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) early on Saturday.
Rentu’s death leaves his younger brother, Sumon Saha, 16, who is undergoing treatment at DMCH’s Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, as the sole survivor of the five-member family.
Around 3am on Tuesday, a fire broke out at the flat in the Shafipur area when the head of the family, Shuvash Saha, tried to light a cigarette and inadvertently set alight a gas oven in the kitchen. The fire soon spread to the other rooms, leaving all five family members with severe burns.
Neighbours rescued the seriously injured family from the fire and rushed them to the state-run hospital in Dhaka.
Shuvash, 50, died later on Tuesday, while his wife, Rina Rani, 50, and their daughter, Rumki, 18, passed away on Friday.
Relatives meanwhile visited the hospital on Saturday and took away the bodies of the four victims for funeral rites.
