Children stage sit-in to demand electoral manifesto rights inclusion

A group of lower-income group children observed a sit-in outside the National Press Club Thursday, demanding the inclusion of child rights in the manifestos of political parties for the upcoming general election.

Amar Odhikar Campaign organised the sit-in to mark “Child Rights Week”, held this year from  September 30 to October 5.

The primary-level school students held festoons which demanded the constitutional recognition of primary schooling as one of the basic needs, effective measures to stop child oppression, and stern action against eve teasing.

Afterwards, representatives from the children submitted memorandums to the offices of Awami League and BNP.

BNP Joint Secretary-General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Deputy Office Secretary of Awami League Mrinal Kanti Das received the memorandum on behalf of their respective parties.

According to constitution, all children have a right to education and the state should take initiatives to ensure the rights of children, speakers said.

In addition, the National Education Policy-2011 said providing primary education free of cost to every child and special services to underprivileged children should also be safeguarded.

Taslima, a nine-year-old girl who participated in the human chain with her brothers, said she ate only a biscuit and banana for her breakfast. She is in class III now and her economic condition was visible through her matted hair and attire.

“Having a nutritious lunch during school hours is very important for a student because it is very tough to study when one is hungry,” said Chairperson of Amar Odhikar Campaign Dr Nilufar Banu.

Vice- Chairperson of Amar Odhikar Campaign Masuda Faruq Ratna also took part in the programme. A number of teachers also took part in the event.
