A court on Thursday sentenced three people to death and another to life term imprisonment for killing a man in Chitalmari upazila in 2003.
The condemned convicts are Satya Baroi, son of Pulin Baroi of Kalshira village of Chitalmari upazila, Tapon Majumder, son of Nirmal alias Mohadeb Majumder of the same village, and Mushfiqur Rahman Mukul, son of Hedayet Sheikh of Arpara village in Sadar upazila.
The court also fined lifer Dilip Biswas, son of Nogen Biswas of Kalshira of Chitalmari upazila, Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer one year more RI.
According to the prosecution, the four convicts – Satya, Tapon, Mukul and Dilip - chopped fish enclosure owner Bhupal, 45, son of Jodish Chandra of Rubaiakul village in Chitalmari upazila, with sharp weapons following previous enmity, leaving him injured on November 9, 2003. He died on the way to hospital.
Victim’s brother, Obhishek filed a case with Chitalmari police station the next day.
After the investigation, sub-inspector Babul Chandra Banik of the same police station submitted a chargesheet to the court against eight men on June 30, 2004.
After examining records and 32 witnesses, Judge SM Solaiman of district and sessions judge court handed down the verdict.
The court acquitted four other accused – Babul, Bithika, Gourango and Sanjoy.
