Illegal structure demolish in Gazipur: 10 injured

At least 10 were injured in a clash between shop owners and BIWTA officials during the demolishing of illegal structures in the Tongi area on the bank of the river Turag, Thursday. 

After pointing out 33 illegal structures, the authorities demolished at least 10 shops.

According to an order from the High Court, a drive jointly conducted by the Gazipur district administration and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA), led by executive magistrate of Gazipur Mamunur Rashid, was initiated at the market area on the bank of Turag River at around 12pm, police sources said.

The altercation erupted when a few BIWTA officials went to evict certain shops and cattle markets in the area beforehand, leaving 10 individuals injured.

The injured were treated at nearby clinic and hospital.

Executive Magistrate Mamunur Rashid said: “The drive was conducted according to a HC order that directed to evict the illegal structure if there is any in the boundary of the river.”
