Global human rights organisation Amnesty International has called upon Bangladesh to overturn death sentences of war criminals including that of Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
It also urged to hold appeal trial of the BNP leader “in line with international standard.”
“Death penalty is the ultimate cruel and inhuman punishment which can never be a way to deliver justice,” Bangladesh Researcher at Amnesty, Abbas Faiz, said.
Delaying death sentences can be the first step towards abolishing provision of death penalty, he said.
The call was made in a report published on their website.
Faiz said execution will not provide justice to victims of ‘horrific abuses’ during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
Amnesty also called out to the Government of Bangladesh “to ensure that the appeal trial of SQ Chowdhury complies with international standard and without recourse to death penalty.”
The organisation says they oppose death penalty in all cases without any exception “regardless of the nature or circumstances of the crime.”
Earlier on Tuesday, Internatnional Crimes Tribunal 1 gave BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury death for crimes committed against humanity during the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971.
