Nuclear Industry Information Centre opened in city

A newly set-up Nuclear Industry Information Centre (NIIC) has been inaugurated in the city’s Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre on Tuesday.

The NIIC will provide information to people on the planned 2000MW Rooppur Nuclear Power plant Project.

The NIIC is the outcome of the memorandum of understanding signed on June 4 last year between the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Russia’s state corporation “Rosatom.”

The centre has a modern high-tech cinema hall with panoramic 3D-projection, computer graphics and animation, stereo sound, interactive consoles and personal monitor facilities.

The NIIC has two halls. Hall 1 is equipped with nuclear power plant (NPP) safety models, which will show two-way safety process of NPP. Dosimeter will measure the radiation status in human body.

Educational film on nuclear energy will be shown in this hall.

Hall 2 has six tables with 36 seats. Each table has a PC with touch pad for interactive quizzes and games.

State Minister for Science and Technology Yeafesh Osman inaugurated the Information Centre.

Yeafesh Osman said the Center is a multi-functional communication centre aiming at educating people about the use of nuclear energy.

“Dummy equipment of power plants will be kept in the centre to give people an idea about the process of setting up a nuclear power plant,” he added.

Sergei Novikov, director of communications of Rosatom; Alexander Nikolaev, Russian ambassador to Bangladesh; and Arshad Hossain, director general of the Novo Theatre; were present at the programme.
