Swachip doctors harass Dab member

A senior associate professor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University  was allegedly harassed on Sunday by doctors of Shadhinota Chikitshak Parisad (Swachip), in the presence of the university’s vice-chancellor, leading to cancellation of a viva for two professor posts of radiology department.

Sources said an interview board of BSMMU, presided by its VC Pran Gopal Datta, sat on Sunday to interview candidates for the post of professors in different departments.

Associate Professor Dr Nazrul Islam and Dr Sadrul of Radiology Department, who are known as members of BNP-backed organisation Doctors Association of Bangladesh (Dab), had applied for the professor post, they said.

During Dr Nazrul’s viva exam, a group of Awami League-backed Swachip doctors requested the viva board not to promote Dr Nazrul for his alleged involvement in the vandalism of Bangabandhu’s mural in 2006, a charge he was cleared off by a probe committee at the time.

Later, Dr Nazrul was allegedly physically harassed and forced out of the room.

Prof Dr Sayedur Rahman, registrar of the BSMMU, told the Dhaka Tribune that both interviews were cancelled to prevent untoward situation.
