Dhaka-Chittagong Highway blocked

Agitating students blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway at Sitakunda upazila’s Bypass Road in Chittagong on Tuesday, protesting the death of their fellow student in a road accident.

The students torched at least three vehicles and vandalised 10-12 other vehicles on the highway.

Due to the blockade, about 30km long tailback was seen on the both sides of the highway, effecting commuters of different routes, said local sources.

At around 9:30am, a speeding Chittagong-bound bus ran over Rabiul Hossain Rubel, 22, while he was crossing the road in the Bypass Road area, leaving him dead on the spot dead.

He was a sixth semester BBA student at International Islamic University Chittagong.

Following Rabiul’s death, several thousand IIUC students blocked the highway, vandalised the bus and torched it, said Md Iqbal Ali, assistant superintendent of police of Sitakunda circle of Chittagong range.

The students blocked the highway from 10am-1:30pm, Iqbal Ali said, adding: “The students and the authorities sat in a meeting in this regard.”
