Workers' unrest in Gazipur; factories close

Over a hundred factories were compelled to close down for the day because of mass demonstrations by readymade garment workers in Gazipur on Monday morning.

Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Mymensingh highways were barricaded for more than three hours because of the demonstrations.

Clashes between workers and police persisted in Board Bazar, Bhogra, Barabari, Basan, Chourasta and other areas until 11:30am.

Hundreds of workers took to the streets around 8am in the morning for the third consecutive day of demonstrations, demanding a minimum wage of Tk8,000.

Police charged batons and lobbed teargas shells to dispel the agitating workers from the highway. Clashes persisted for more than three hours.

Gazipur Industrial Police Assistant Superintendent (SP) Mosharraf Hossain said workers were resorting to violence, vandalising vehicles while demonstrating in some areas.

According to witnesses, the workers left around midday after factories in nearby areas were announced closed for the day.

The SP told Dhaka Tribune though the police cannot do anything regarding the workers' wages, they will do everything in their power to alleviate the miseries caused by these demonstrations.

On Sunday, the workers blocked Dhaka-Tangail Highway for over an hour before police intervened and removed them from Kaliakoir upazila. At least 100 people were injured in the unrest.

On Saturday, thousands of workers took to the streets, alleging that their owners had denied them leave to join a rally in the capital's Suhrawardy Udyan.

The government had formed a wage board for the workers in May. The board had several meetings with parties concerned, but was yet to reach a conclusion.
