Two youths drowned in the Buriganga river in the Hazribagh area of the capital Friday evening whilst immersing an effigy of a religious idol.
The deceased were identified as Suvom Palmiki, 17, a student of Dhaka University Laboratory School and son of Sukumar Balmiki, and Sajal Das, 17, a student of Mukulika Kindergarten High School and son of Suren Das.
Both resided in the Gonoktoli area of Hazaribagh.
Sajal’s uncle Shree Sukran Das told the Dhaka Tribune that the duo went to the Buriganga river with the effigy to immerse it in the water around 6pm.
Around 7pm they were pulled from the water and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the doctors on duty declared them dead, he added.
