Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday formally announced the raising of the 17 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army by hoisting the flag of the division at Jalalabad Cantonment in Sylhet.
At the function, the flags of the newly formed 360 Infantry Brigade and the 32 and 33 Bangladesh Infantry Regiments were also raised, says a UNB report from Sylhet.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith hoisted the flag of the 360 Infantry Brigade, while Chief Whip of Jatiya Sangsad Abdus Shahid and Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan raised the flags of the 32 and 33 Bangladesh Infantry Regiments respectively.
Hasina said: “As a head of the government, I’ve given the Army whatever was possible as per my capacity. I’m reiterating my firm commitment to give whatever necessary for a modern army in the future.”
The prime minister reiterated her firm commitment to provide in the future whatever is necessary for a modern army.
“It’s my belief you’ll brighten the country’s image through your careful consideration, professional skills and integrity. And also you’ll further enhance your reputation in the UN peacekeeping mission in international arena,” she said, addressing the Darbar after raising the flag of the newly set up 17 Infantry Division at Jalalabad Cantonment.
Hasina said a composite brigade comprising two infantry units and one engineering construction battalion will be set up soon to ensure security and surveillance of the dream Padma Multipurpose Bridge project. “Such progress of development will also continue in the future.”
