Mother jumps off roof after daughter dies

Journalist Naznin Akhter Tonni, a senior reporter of daily Janakantha, has survived after she jumped off the roof of a five-storey building in the capital’s Kalyanpur on Monday after her only child succumbed to ailments.

Tonni, 35, wife of Raqibul Islam Mukul, chief reporter of GTV, is undergoing treatment at the Neuro Surgery Ward of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Neurosurgeon Fazlul Huq said after a CT scan, they have found no severe hemorrhage so far.

“Only her right arm is fractured,” the surgeon said.

“Some other tests have also been conducted. After the results of those tests are out, we will be sure whether she is out of danger.”

Tonni’s seven-year-old daughter Chandramukhi, who had been undergoing treatment at Dhaka Shishu Hospital at Agargaon for the last few days, died at around 4pm, said family members and colleagues.

They said a few hours after the death of the child, Tonni jumped from the building around 6pm. Locals and relatives of Tonni rushed her to the DMCH around 6:30pm.

A large number of journalists, colleagues and well-wishers thronged to the DMCH after they came to know about the incident.
