70 BCL activists face charges over Sylhet attack

A case was filed against 70 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Sylhet unit, including its chief Hiran Mahmud Nipu, over the Sunday attack on the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) and Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD).

Sylhet Kotwali Police Station Sub Inspector Sahabuddin filed the case on Sunday night.

Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner MA Jalil told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday morning that Sylhet BCL chief Nipu was the prime accused.

The case was filed against 18 named and up to 50 unnamed BCL activists.

"The case is being recorded. There have been no arrests yet but we are on it."

On Sunday, Sylhet BCL activists attacked a joint rally by CPB and BSD.

CPB President Mujahidul Islam Selim, BSD General Secretary Khalekuzzaman and Kotwali police station officer-in-charge Akhter Hossain were among the injured.

Sylhet BCL chief Nipu was seen in photographs of the vandalism that were run in dailies and other medias.

Hours after the incident, the central committee of the ruling Awami League's youth affiliate Bangladesh Chhatra League dissolved their Sylhet committee.
