Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate drilling of well-7 of Kailashtila Gas Field during her visit to Sylhet on Tuesday.
Located at Gopalganj upazila in Sylhet, the field has a reserve of 44 million barrels of oil and 658 billion cubic feet of gas.
Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration Company (Bapex) will start main drilling from December this year that is likely to be completed in March 2014. The estimated cost for the drilling is Tk2.2bn.
The state-owned Sylhet Gas Fields Limited will be able to extract around 500 barrels of oil and 25 mmcf of gas every day from this well, said Managing Director of SGFL Md Tofazzel Hossain.
In 2011-12, Bapex carried out 3D surveys in Kailashtila, Rashidpur and Haripur and found oil and gas reserves in several zones below the gas structures in Kailashtila and Haripur and only gas in Rashidpur.
