Project money embezzled by UP chairmen

Allegations of corruption and other irregularities have been made in 127 projects running under the Local Government Support Project-2 in nine unions of Chatkhil upazila under Noakhali district.

Every year the local government and ministries provide funds in two installments to these unions for running the project. In continuation to the trend, this year more than Tk9m was allocated to the nine unions of the upazila.

The project was granted at a programme chaired by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Chairman of Block Grant Co-ordination Committee LGSP-2.

Meanwhile, the unions have taken up different number of projects with the fund allocated to them.

Allegations have been made that the respective chairmen of the nine unions have withdrawn all the funds allocated for the projects.

Although they have withdrawn the money, it was found that only 40% to 50% work had been done in 2/3 unions while in some unions no work was done at all.

However, the nine chairmen showed the progress of work by preparing false documents, said the allegations.

Separate probe committees have been formed to investigate into the matter in each of the unions.

Amid the complaints, the chairmen said they had withdrew the money because it was mandatory to withdraw the money within a certain period of time. They assured to get the works done with the money.

Every year the money allocated through installments are embezzled by the chairmen in collaboration with the local administration.
