Family blames police for negligence in arresting killers

The family of Rabiul Islam, a Chhatra League leader who was killed on April 14 in Rajshahi, has blamed police for inaction in arresting the prime accused.

Rabiul, a former vice-president of Rajshahi University School and College unit Chhatra League, was allegedly hacked to death by pro-BNP men led by Rejaul Karim, Sayeed, Setu, Babla, Sohagh, Rezaul and others, according to the charge sheet.

After the killing, victim’s elder brother Shafiqul Islam filed a murder case with Boalia police station accusing 12 pro-BNP men. Six of the accused got bail from the High Court.

At a press briefing Thursday, victim’s uncle Zakir Hossain alleged that police was yet to arrest the prime accused while the killers had been moving in the village freely.

Shafiqul alleged that the killers on bail had been threatening the family openly of dire consequences.

“Following frequent threats from the accused, we also filed a general diary. We feel insecure as police did not heed the matter,” said Sohel Rana, another elder brother of the deceased.

The family demanded security and immediate arrest of the accused.
