This year marks a watershed moment in both Bangladesh sports and education as a chapter on Bangladesh's sporting heroes has been included in the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) textbook.
Most of the chapter is covered by cricketing sensation Shakib Al Hasan and legendary footballer Kazi Salahuddin. An image of the first Bangladeshi to climb Mount Everest, Musa Ibrahim is also present, along with seven other sports personalities in the level seven's English for Today textbook for the 2013 academic year.
NCTB added a 13-page chapter titled "Games and Sports" in unit seven this year, which was published very early in the year. However, Kazi Salahuddin, who now serves as Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president, came to know about the whole thing yesterday.
"I feel really proud. I want to thank the government and education ministry for this endeavor and including me in the textbook. It's also a proud moment for Bangladesh sports as well," said the former national striker and the member of the Swadhin Bangla Football team.
The chapter starts with a match-ending picture of Bangladesh cricket team skipper Mushfiqur Rahim and Nasir Hossain celebrating winning a game. The "Lesson 5: Our Golden boys and girls" contains the summery of Salahuddin's playing and coaching career and the story of cricketing all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is also a prominent feature.
The name of Shakib Al Hasan and Salahuddin, however, is spelt wrong incorrectly twice in the text.
The chapter also included the pictures of football legends Diego Maradona, Pele, cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Australian swimmer Ian Thorpe.
