DU students face severe water crisis at TSC

Students of Dhaka University (DU) have been facing acute water crisis over the last few weeks due to damaged water pumps and pipelines that hamper supply.

The Teachers-Students Centre (TSC) cafeteria, DUCSU cafeteria, Mall intersection and Hakim intersection areas where food stalls are located are the worse hit.

According to students the supply of water is hampered in the afternoon during lunch time. They said the main water reservoir at TSC has been out of order for several days and has been causing problems at the cafeteria during lunch.

Rashed Talukdar, a second year student of history department who has lunch at the TSC cafeteria said: “The water crisis creates an annoying situation during lunch time when we do not have enough water to wash or drink.”

He said the university authorities were aware of the continuous problems with water supply. He said he wanted them to immediately find a solution to the issue. However, water crisis in area is not new.

Masudur Rahman of the Arabic department said: “The water problem is not new to us as it occurs often. Sometimes we do not have water to wash hands after we eat, which is very annoying.” He said even the library doesn’t get sufficient water supply.

When asked for comments director of TSC Alamgir Hossain said: “We are well aware of the water problems in the area which is due to a damaged water pump.

Engineers are currently working to resolve the problem and hopefully it will be solved by tomorrow [today].”

DU Proctor Amjad Ali said the authorities would take immediate steps to resolve the issue.

“We will build necessary structures to improve water supply shortly,” he added.
