Bus service from Barisal to Dhaka resumes

Operation of passenger buses from the Barisal region to the Gabtali terminal in Dhaka resumed on Saturday at noon.

In protest against assaults on transport workers and the damaging of a vehicle, Bangladesh Bus Truck Owners’ Associationon Thursday ceased bus services travelling to and from the Gabtali bus terminal, which connects passengers to seven districts- Barisal, Patuakhali, Barguna, Khulna, Jessore, Satkhira and Narail.

Aftab Hossain, president of Barisal Bus Owners Association, said bus operations to Dhaka Gabtali bus terminal resumed from Saturday noon after the authorities gave assurances that action will be taken against the persons responsible for ransacking a vehicle and bus counter.

Dipak Chandra Das, vice president of Barisal Bus Owners Association, said they have withdrawn the strike following negotiations between the leaders of Bangladesh Bus Truck Owners’ Association, Bangladesh Road Transport Owners’ Association and Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Union.

However, it will take time to regulate the bus operations towards Dhaka’s Gabtali terminal due to a huge backlog at the Daulatdia-Paturia ferry crossing, Dipak added.

The owners stopped bus operations to and from the terminal after local people ransacked an Eagle Paribahon bus following the death of a motorcyclist on Thursday. The motorcyclist was killed when he collieded with an Eagle Paribahon minibus which was provided by the company to take passengers into the city.
