EC to decide after going through full verdict

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad Thursday said the Election Commission would decide on the registration of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami after examining the full verdict of the High Court.

"We will be able to take further steps regarding Jamaat-e-Islami's registration only after getting the full copy of the verdict. It would be wrong to make any comment on the issue right now," Rakibuddin told reporters after the High Court declared Jamaat's registration as a political party illegal.

Asked about Jamaat lawyer barrister Abdur Razzaq's comment that the party would still be able to participate in elections, CEC Rakibuddin again declined to comment on the matter before going through the full verdict.

"First, we have to see whether the High Court says Jamaat's registration is cancelled or illegal," he added.

"After we get the verdict, we will call a meeting of the full commission as soon as possible. The Election Commission will follow the verdict of the court," he said.

Asked if Jamaat could get new registration from the EC, the CEC said it would not be possible for Jamaat to apply for new registration this year.

The registration of new political parties ahead of the next general elections is already in the last stage.

"As per the election laws, if a party's registration is cancelled, no one can participate in the elections using that party's symbol. The party members can, however, take part in the polls as independent candidates. But they will not be able to join any alliance," Rakibuddin said.
