Ex-MP Aworanga dies in Munshiganj road crash

Former Awami League lawmaker Hemayet Ullah Aworanga was among six people who were killed in a head on collision between his personal jeep and a passenger bus, which took place on Saturday at the Dhaka-Maowa Highway under Louhajongh upazila in Munsiganj.

Only Jalal Uddin, the driver of the jeep, is fighting for life at the Holy Family Hospital in the capital.

Confirming the information, Sub-Inspector (SI) Pradyut Sarkar of Louhajongh police station, said: "The 57-year-old former MP and three of his accompanies were killed on the spot, near Khanbari at around 4pm while they were returning to the ex MP's Shariyatpur residence with 6 others in a jeep."

The four other deceased were identified as Jalal Munshi, Md Yasin, Nuruzzaman, Md Nur Uddin and Ratan Talukder, he said.

"The collision took place when the jeep went out of control after the tire of one of the wheels burst all of a sudden," he said.

Aworanga was elected twice from the Shariatpur-1 constituency in 1991 and 2001, and had a long carrier in Awami League politics and its affiliated organisations.

The injured persons and the bodies of the deceased were on the way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, police said.

The jeep and the passenger bus were also kept at Louhajongh police station but the driver and conductor of the bus managed to flee.
