Mamata’s no to Bangladesh land deal

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media on Saturday to say she would not allow the Indian central governement's plan for a border deal with Bangladesh to go through, reports Times of India.

As with the Teesta water-sharing treaty, there would be no compromise with Bengal’s interests, she said.

“A letter regarding the proposed demarcation of land boundary between India and Bangladesh has been leaked to the media by the central government recently,” Mamata wrote in a Facebook post. “I have discussed the issue several times with the external affairs ministers during the last two years. It is difficult to accept the proposal of giving away land to Bangladesh,” reports Times of India.

The CM said in the Teesta agreement, too, the central governement said different things in the draft and the final stages.

“On the Land Boundary Agreement, the state government had told the national security adviser and the external affairs ministry that the consent of the people residing in these areas must be taken before land is transferred. It must be noted that Bengal will get only about 7,000 acres but will have to cede nearly 17,000 acres to Bangladesh. This cannot be accepted without taking into confidence and the consent of the local people,” Mamata said, demanding to know what was the central governement "hurry to give away our land and our water without the consent of the state?"

Mamata accused the central governement of disturbing the peace in Darjeeling, and had also said earlier that Delhi had given away land from Assam and Tripura to Bangladesh.

“The interests of states cannot be compromised his way. We strongly urge that the central government to follow the established federal norms of the country,” she said.
