The government has formed an inquiry committee to investigate an alleged assault on Assistant Foreign Secretary Tanvir Kabir by First Secretary of the Jeddah Consulate Md Jamal Uddin in the Jeddah hajj camp office on July 1.
“The four-member committee will be headed by Additional Foreign Secretary Mustafa Kamal,” said an official of the foreign ministry.
The other members are Director General Nazrul Islam, and one representative each from the Prime Minister’s Office and National Security Intelligence (NSI), the official said.
The team is likely to leave for Jeddah next week to investigate the situation.
Another foreign ministry official said Jamal Uddin, a deputy director of NSI, should be immediately called back as he would not be able to operate in the Kingdom. “His identity is compromised and he cannot operate in Saudi Arabia anymore,” the official said.
Meanwhile, the foreign office instructed Jamal last week not to attend office until further instruction.
Jeddah Consul General Nazmul Islam after the incident sent a report to the headquarters asking that Jamal Uddin be withdrawn from the mission. “It was also apparent from their verbal statements that Mr Md Jamal Uddin had started the incident,” the report said.
He also said in his report that Jamal had lost all his credibility to continue to work in a diplomatic mission.
NSI Deputy Director Jamal Uddin joined the Jeddah Consulate on May 4 in his first diplomatic assignment.
