A Dhaka court Tuesday rejected the bail plea of two accused in the case filed in connection with the murder of six students in Aminbazar of Savar two years ago.
Earlier in the day, Hazi Mohammad Akhil Uddin and Mohammad Saiful Islam, who have been absconding, surrendered to Dhaka’s Second Additional District Sessions Judge Md Helal Uddin’s court.
The court rejected the plea after hearing and ordered to send them to jail with court warrant.
The murders took place on July 18, 2011, when a mob at Bardeshi village in Aminbazar lynched six college and school students, allegedly mistaking them for robbers.
During Tuesday’s session, defence attorneys Sanaullah Miah and Masud Ahamed Talukder said the two were not listed in the First Information Report of the case.
They did not know that their names were included in the charge sheet and so could not appear before the court before, the lawyers said.
They also said the two deserved bail because 30 other accused had already secured bail in this case.
Additional Public Prosecutors Ananda Chandro Biswas and Shakila Ziasmin, on the other hand, opposed the bail plea saying the two accused remained in hideout since the incident took place.
Therefore, their bail prayers should be rejected because otherwise, the trial procedure would be hampered, the prosecutors said.
On July 8, the same court indicted 60 people, issued arrest warrants against the fugitives and fixed August 25 for hearing on submissions of the prosecution witnesses.
Forty of the accused were charged with murder and the remaining 20 with attempted murder.
Among them, five are in jail custody, 30 are out on bail and the remaining 25, including the latest two, have been absconding.
Earlier, Abdul Hamid, one of the accused, and 12 others gave confessional statements before a magistrate, admitting their complicity in the murders.
Rapid Action Battalion on January 13, pressed charges against 60 people in connection with the killings which the court took cognisance of three days later.
On July 19, 2011, a day after the incident, Savar police station Sub-Inspector Md Anowar Hossain filed a murder case against 500-600 unnamed people from the Bardeshi village.
The dead students are Tipu Sultan of Tejgaon College; Towhidur Rahman Palash, Kamruzzaman Kanto and Ibrahim Khalil of the Mirpur Bangla College; Shams Rahim Shamam of Maple Leaf International School and Sitaf Jabi Munif of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology.
