Social media reacts on Ghulam Azam verdict

The much awaited verdict of Ameer Ghulam Azam have been delievered on Monday. The social media users have been reacting vociferously and expressing their doubts about whether there could have been other motivations behind the verdict.

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) 1 has given Jamaat-e-Islami former Ameer Ghulam Azam 90 years imprisonment. ICT sentenced Ghulam Azam on five counts – 10 years for one count, 20 years each for four other counts. The three-member ICT 1 panel, led by Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, has given the verdict.

In an immediate reaction after the verdict, prosecutor Ziad Al-Malum said: "The tribunal said Ghulam Azam should get capital punishment but considering his age, we are sentencing him to 90 years in jail."

Defence counsel Saifur Rahman said : "We believe the verdict is not appropriate. We will appeal against the verdict in the apex court."

The charges were based on 61 incidents of crimes against humanity. Ghulam was charged with crimes against humanity for killing 38 people.

On hearing the verdict, Ganajagaran Mancha and several student organizations on Monday called a dawn-to-dusk hartal for Tuesday, saying the verdict delivered against Ghulam Azam was too lenient. Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islam has announced a hartal on the same day, demanding the release of the ex-Jamaat guru.
