Ghulam Azam verdict: Cultural alliance disappointed

Sammilito Sangskritik Jote, an alliance of cultural organisations, has expressed frustration over the verdict delivered against Ghulam Azam.

While addressing a press conference, the alliance chief, Nasir Uddin Yusuf Bachhu, said capital punishment would have been more appropriate against the notorious war criminal Ghulam Azam since five charges against him were incontestably proven. These charges can only set Ghulam Azam to capital punishment, he observed.

Bachchu said: “We thought we’re going to get long-awaited verdict as Ghulam Azam was found guilty in five counts which involve crimes against humanity.”

The court itself pronounced that Ghulam Azam was “the architect of genocide in 1971”, but chose to spare him, disseminating frustration amongst people.

“But, now we can’t accept this verdict,” Bachhu continued.

During the press conference held at TSC cafeteria on Dhaka University campus, Bachchu vowed to continue the movement demanding the death penalty for Ghulam Azam.

“Sammilito Sangskrtik Jote never retreated from its movement. It has never ceased to move against the war criminals and imperialism,” he stated.

Senior leaders of the alliance including Dr Muhammad Samad, Jhuna Chowdhury, Hasan Arif, Mafizul Haq and Manjurul Islam were present at the press conference.
