CMP undertakes special plan to check traffic jam

Traffic Department of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has undertaken a special plan to control movement of vehicles to check traffic jam in the port city during the month of Ramadan.

Under the plan, most of the busy roads have been brought under one-way system. Besides, some other measures have been taken to reduce traffic congestion in front of road crossings,  shopping malls and schools and colleges.

“This year, too we have undertaken the plan in consultation with leaders of business associations and vehicles owners’ association to check traffic jam,” M Shafiqul Islam, CMP Commissioner, told BSS.

Islam said community police have been deployed at different trade centres and shipping malls under the CMP’s own arrangements.

Besides, he said, additional police personnel were engaged at different roads.

“We have increased traffic inspectors to oversee the entire traffic jam reducing strategies,” he added

City Planner Subhash Barua said traffic jam could never be checked keeping footpaths and roadside areas occupied.

Traffic jam could be reduced to a large extent if an integrated plan is implemented and traffic laws are enforced properly.

The city with over six million people has more or less 200,000 mechanised vehicles.
