RMG workers-police clash hurts 50 in Gazipur

At least 50 people, including 12 policemen, were injured in a clash between the law enforcers and garments workers in Gazipur on Saturday.

Hundreds of workers of Macihata Group were staging demonstrations from last couple of days to press home different demands, including wage hike, reports our Gazipur correspondent.

But, instead of settling the matter, witnesses said the factory owners allegedly instigated some persons to launch an assault on the agitating workers.

As soon as the news of the attack spread out, hundreds of workers of Machihata Group took to the street at about 10:30am. Later, several hundred workers of seven adjacent factories joined the protest, blocked the Nabinagar-Kaliakair highway and vandalised some 15 factories.

Later, the authorities concerned shut down the factories for the day to avert further untoward situation.

On information, police rushed in and tried to talk out the demonstrating workers from withdrawing their barricade.

At one stage, police charged baton, fired rubber bullets and tear shells targeting the protesters, leaving at least 50 people injured.

Shah Mohammad, sub-inspector of Gazipur unit of Industrial Police, confirmed the matter.

Additional police have been deployed in the areas to avert any further untoward situation.
