Decorator, recruiting, security, cleaning jobs add Tk39bn in FY11

Four selected service sectors – decorator service providers, recruiting service providers, security service providers and cleaning service providers – contributed total value addition of Tk38.562bn in the country’s GDP of fiscal 2010-11.   “Overall GDP of the country increased by 0.48% points in fiscal 2010-11 if the gross value of these four service sectors are added to the ‘Real Estate, Renting and Business Services Activities’ at current price,” said a Survey on ‘Selected Business Services Providers, 2012’ published on June 30 this year by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).   The survey was conducted based on data from the fiscal 2010-11 and 2009-10. Activities related to these services were not included while estimating the previous GDPs for lack of data. The report also revealed that these four-service sectors added Tk32.282bn in the GDP of fiscal 2009-10, reports UNB.   AKM Ashraful Haque, Deputy Director of BBS and also the Focal Point of Survey on ‘Selected Business Services, 2012’ told UNB that the selected four service sectors are actually under the economic sectors of real estate, renting and business activities for estimating the GDP, but these four sectors were not considered earlier for estimating GDP.   He informed that the service sectors play a vital role in the GDP estimation of many developed countries. Like the other countries, the contributions of service sectors in Bangladesh’s GDP is increasing day by day and it accounts around 50% of the country’s GDP engaging around 30 percent of the total labour force.   If value of decorator service providers, recruiting service providers, security service providers and cleaning service providers are added then the sectoral GDP of real estate, renting and business services activities would increase by 7.06% and thus the country’s overall GDP increased by 0.48% in fiscal 2010-11.   According to the survey report, 486 establishments of security services added the highest amount of Tk27.416bn Gross Value Added (GVA) to GDP in fiscal 2010-11 and provided employment to 2,79,084 people.   A total of 18,011 decorator service providers added Tk5.151bn GVA to GDP in the FY 11 and generated jobs for 1,11,100 people.   As many as 414 recruiting service establishments added Tk5.616bn GVA to GDP in FY 11 and created employment for some 3,896 people while 20 cleaning service providers added Tk379m GVA to GDP in FY 11 and provided employment to some 5,738 people.   The survey findings showed that of the survey-listed 18,011 decorator service providers, the highest number of 5,502 decorator service providers were located in Dhaka while the lowest number of 696 in Barisal.   Of the total 414 recruiting service providers, the highest number of 396 was situated in Dhaka while the lowest number of 2 in Sylhet.   Out of the listed 486 security service providers, the highest 399 were positioned in the capital and the lowest 2 in Barisal. Meanwhile, out of the 20 cleaning service providers, the highest number of 18 organisations was in Dhaka while one each at Barisal and Chittagong.
