Border Guard Bangladesh emerged as the champions of the Walton Invitational National Handball Championship by beating Bangladesh Police 34-25 in the final held at the Paltan Ground handball stadium on July 7.
The winners led the first-half 13-11. Imdadul Haque of BGB scored 10 goals while Khairuzzaman and Sudhan Barua netted six each. Mahbubul Alam of Police scored seven goals for his team.
In the third place decider held in the morning, Chittagong Metropolis outplayed Chapai Nawabganj 34-28. The winners displayed superb team spirit in the second half to win the game after having trailed 13-16 at the end of the first half. Azad scored a game high nine goals for the winners and he was followed by Titon and Jabir, who netted eight goals each. Shohag of Chapai Nawabganj netted 12 times for the losing side.
Imdadul Haque of BGB was adjudged as the best player of the tournament and Hira of Chuadanga was nominated as the best goalkeeper.
Nurul Fazal Bulbul, the president of Bangladesh Handball Federation, distributed prizes as the chief guest. F.M. Iqbal bin Anwar, Dawn and the additional director of the Walton, handball federation general secretary Asaduzzaman Kohinoor were also present among others.
A total of ten teams participated in the meet.
