Elephant stampede kills one in Sherpur

A tribal woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Boro Gazni in Jhenigati upazila early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Mandira Sangma, 28, wife of Hadiram Nath Marak of the area.

Locals said a herd of marauding elephants invaded Boro Gazni village in the upazila at about 1:30am, reports UNB.

Villagers made an attempt to drive away the elephants by torching lamps.

At one stage, a wild elephant pounced on Mandira and crushed her to death by trampling at about 4am.

Later locals recovered the body.

Jhenigati Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mozammel Hossain confirmed the incident.
