Councillors’ campaign gaining momentum

The election campaign by aspiring candidates in the Gazipur City Corporation polls is gaining momentum, with 455 candidates vying for 57 posts of ward commissioners.

Besides, women candidates are also engaged in campaigning for 19 reserved posts of commissioners.

Talking to the voters, it was learnt that they were eager to exercise their franchise in the upcoming polls.

They expect the elected councillors will tackle the problems facing their respective wards.

Locals said electing suitable councillors is the key to ensuring development in the wards.

A candidate, Abdul Karim of ward 26 said he is committed to the development of his ward.

Another candidate Hannan Mia of the same ward echoed the sentiment.

He said he is a first-time contestant and vowed to work tirelessly for the development of his ward, if elected.

The ward 26 is constituted of West Jaydebpur, Bilashpur, North Bilashpur and Shibbari.

The aspiring councillors are paying door-to-door visits to the voters to garner support and promising all kinds of developmental works in their respective wards.

However, voters are sceptical as to whether the elected councillors will keep their word after the election.

A voter, Gani Mia, told the Dhaka Tribune, after the election the successful candidates hardly care any more about the voters and are least concerned about development works in their respective areas.
