Transport strike in Rajshahi division Monday

The Rajshahi regional committee of Bangladesh Sarak Paribahan Sramik Federation called an indefinite transport strike in eight districts in Rajshahi Division starting Monday to press home their 10-point demands.

Kamal Hossain Robi, secretary of the committee, announce the program at a press conference at the Bogra Press Club on June 26. He said that unless the authorities met their demands by June 30, they would start a strike and stop plying Dhaka-bound coaches and other vehicles via Bogra.

Bogra Motor Sramik Union President Abdul Latif told the Dhaka Tribune that the government was yet to call any meeting with the organization to fulfill their demand.

Demands include pay hike; driving licenses on easy terms; ban on plying of unauthorised vehicles like Karimon-Nasimon; removal of roadside markets; and prevention of harassment and extortion by police on the highways.

The leaders of the organisation also demanded that steps be taken by the authorities to stop illegal toll collection on the highways in Natore, Dinajpur and Mohananda bridges.
