Bangladesh can be richer than Singapore: Prof Yunus

Bangladesh could be greatly benefitted if it allowed neighbours to use its suitable geographical positioning, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus said.

Addressing the Social Business Youth Convention 2013 at Daffodil University in the capital on Saturday, the Nobel laureate said: “Bangladesh can be richer than Singapore. Singapore allowed other countries to use Singapore for business purposes. Bangladesh has a great geographical location that can be used for communication to India, Nepal, Bhutan and China.”

Yunus also said: “Bangladesh needs a change in leadership. We need youth leaders for developing the country.”

Regarding the US’s suspension of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) facility for Bangladesh, he said: “We could not satisfy them [US] regarding various issues like labour safety and rights. The suspension is a result of that.”
