Blogger Asif Mohiuddin granted bail

A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to blogger Asif Mohiuddin who was detained in April 3 this year for allegedly violating information, communication and technology laws.

Dhaka metropolitan session’s senior special judge Md Zahirul Haque passed the order responding to defence lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua’s plea around 3pm.

Two separate non-First Information Report (FIR) cases were filed – one against Asif and the other against bloggers Mashiur Rahman Biplob, Russel Pervez and Subrata Adhikari Shuvo under Section 57(2) of Information Communication Technology Act 2006.

Earlier, the court set Thursday (June 27) for framing charges against the accused bloggers. However, the court deferred the date and set August 25 as Asif was not produced before the judge. The three other accused bloggers who are on bail, however, presented themselves before the court today.

On June 2 this year, the same court granted bail to blogger Moshiur Rahman Biplob while bloggers Subrata Adhikari Shuvo and Rasel Parvez were granted bail on May 12.

The four bloggers were arrested early April from different parts of the capital for allegedly making “derogatory contents about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (SM)” on the internet.
