Many marooned as tidal surge hits Bagerhat, Barguna

The low-lying areas of Bagerhat and Barguna districts were inundated by tidal surge triggered by low formed over the Northwest Bay, reports UNB.

In Bagerhat, vast areas in Sadar, Mongla, Rampal, Sharankhola and Moralganj upazilas were submerged by the surge, leaving 100,000 people marooned. The stranded people were passing their time amid misery.

Some areas in Mongla upazila went under knee-deep water.

Ferry services at Morolganj Ferry Terminal remained suspended for five to six hours due to the surge in water in the river.

Besides, the 12-kilometre cross-dam of Water Development Board (WDB) at several points is now at risk.

Executive Engineer of Bagerhat WDB Mohammad Khalilur Rahman said the water is flowing above five to six feet high than the normal level due to high tide.

He said water entered Bashbaria, Bemorta, Radhabollob and Sonnashi areas over the dam.

In Barguna, several hundred villages in five upazilas – Sadar, Begati, Patharghata, Amtali and Taltali — the district were inundated by the high tide due to the deep depression.

Many areas in the district town also went under water.
