Job opportunities for environment graduates

Job opportunities for environment graduates has increased in the country as Bangladesh is one of the countries that is most vulnerable to climate change mainly due to its low-lying landscape and geographic location, experts said at a discussion.

The Department of Environmental Science and Management of North South University has organised the discussion titled ‘Climate Change and opportunities for Environmental Graduates in Bangladesh’ at its campus on Saturday.

Dr Aminul Islam, a senior advisor at United Nations Development Project said: “Bangladesh is one of the most common examples of climate change effects because of its location, therefore the prospects of green jobs in the country are huge.”

“The future adaptation and mitigation measures will generate hundreds and thousands of jobs. Thus the country needs more environment graduates,” he said.

Meanwhile, Shabel Firoz, theCountry Director of Islamic Relief Bangladesh said that since Bangladesh has already started facing regular extreme weather and climate events, the country need more experts in the area not only to prevent such changes but also to diminish the disaster damages.

“The upcoming requirement for the area of disaster management is huge while renewable energy, buildings and construction, transportation, basic industries, agriculture and forestry will also be important areas for the future green job market,” Shabel said.

Ragib Ali, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, North South University, Professor Amin U Sarker, Vice Chancellor, North South University, Dr Aminul Islam, Senior Advisor, United Nations Development Project, Abdul Motaleb, Country Leader of World Bank in Bangladesh and Muqeet Majumder Babu, the chairman of Prokriti o Jibon foundation, Dr Hasan Mahmud, the chairman of the DESM, North South University, Dr Nurul Amin, professor, North South University, Dr Mizanur Rahman Khan, professor, North South University, were also present at the programme.
