To portray the struggle of women from all walks of life, on the backdrop of patriarchal society, Shadhona has come up with a collage of dance recitals named “Shakti” which will be staged on June 26, 6:30pm at the EMK Centre in Dhanmondi.
The dance recitals are an effort to show the hardships faced by women everyday all over the country. Shadhona has been conducting a workshop in different area of the country for the last one year and this year’s show will incorporate episodes from the previous events as well as new ones.
About the new production, dance exponent Lubna Marium shares her input with Dhaka Tribune: “It is a unique initiative to make the young women aware of their social rights and also educate them through feminist ideology.
‘Shakti’ aims to create a space for critical reflection, based on the conviction that the arts and the artists do not exist in a vacuum, but are active participants in the process of shaping our culture. It aims to direct youngsters to believe that creativity and imagination are powerful instruments.”
The performers explored and discussed issues of individual and practical life in connection with the socio-cultural aspects. Through self invented movements, they will show their best and depict the hidden emotions and strong forces on dance recitals. While talking about feminism in dance, Lubna Marium said, “To realise and bring out the spirit of womanhood, both physically and psychologically, we worked on few real life experiences in line with the ideology of feminism.”
“We have done a lot with the form of dance. From my point of view, why can’t we tell our stories, instead of the great mythological characters? And what better way to portray this, than through the eyes of a woman”? she added.
