Sylhet road blockade withdrawn

The District Truck Owners’ Association withdrew the blockade on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway on Saturday, 20 hours after enforcing it.

The standstill was eased following a meeting among Police, district administration and the workers union at the Deputy Commissioner’s (DC) office on Saturday morning.

Abul Khaher Iju, president of the District Truck Owners’ Association, said they had decided to call off the programme from 2pm following a fruitful meeting with administration.

Traffic on the highway came to a halt from 12pm Friday, as the truck workers blocked the highway protesting the vandalism of trucks at different points in the city.

Earlier, locals vandalised at least 46 trucks because they had entered the city before 10pm.

Presided over by Sylhet DC Shahidul Islam, district unit Awami League’s Secretary Sofiqur Rahman Choudhury, Deputy Police Commissioner Ejaj Ahmed and the leaders of the truck owners & workers association attended the meeting among others.

SM Rokon Uddin, Additional Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police, informed that the meeting had decided on a new timing for movement of trucks inside the Sylhet city – 6pm to 8am.

According to the previous arrangement, trucks could only enter the city after 10pm.
