Tension mounts at RU as Shibir-BCL clash

Seven people were injured yesterday in a clash between Islami Chhatra Shibir and Banladesh Chhatra League at Lakshmipur Polytechnic Institute. While in Rajshahi University authorities imposed fresh bindings over students staying at halls following a face-off situation between the two parties.

Our Rajshahi University correspondent reports, following a series of showdown of Islami Chhatra Shibir, and face-off between Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League, the Rajshahi University campus became tense where the authority, imposed restrictions over students staying at their dormitories.

A notice served by the authorities said, resident students have to enter halls before 10pm and they would not be allowed to go outside of the halls before 7am until any further notice.

Authorities also said students are not allowed to stay overnight at the halls without residential status.

SM Jahid, provost of Bangabandhu Hall, said the decision was taken to ensure security for the students as Shibir was trying to make the campus situation volatile for the last few days.

Soharab Hossain, Socialist Students’ Front RU unit convener said, the decision was against the general students.He also demanded the decision withdrawn.

Organised for the last few days, Shibir activists started their movement following the victory of BNP and 18 party-backed mayoral candidate Mosaddaque Hossain Bulbul to the polls to Rajshahi City Corporation.

They were moving on campus with a show of their strength after three years and six months of their being ousted from the university followed by a clash with BCL that left the BCL activist Faruk Hossain killed on 8 February 2010.

At least seven people were injured in a clash between activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Lakshmipur Polytechnic Institute yesterday, reports UNB.

Police said the clash ensued when a group of BCL men obstructed Shibir activists from bringing out a procession on the campus and left seven injured.
