‘WB statements not always infallible’

Outgoing chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Ghulam Rahman on Wednesday said statements issued by the World Bank were not always infallible.

“The Anti-Corruption Commission cannot run its investigation in accordance with the World Bank’s recommendation. The commission will conduct an investigation as per its own law. We do not run our activities according to the World Bank’s words,” he said while addressing a press conference atthe ACC headquarters at Segunbagicha.

He said former communication minister Abul Hossain cannot be listed as accused, as evidence would not be found against him.

Ghulam Rahman said there was no corruption in Padma bridge project, but only a ‘conspiracy of corruption.’

“World Bank’s decision to not fund the Padma bridge project for corruption conspiracy is not justified. Rather, the bank should have financed the project in a way that creates no opportunity for people to [commit corrupt activities].”

Congratulating the government’s decision to finance Padma bridge from its own funds, he said: "I think the construction of Padma bridge will surely be completed, since there is sufficient allocation for the bridge in the proposed budget."
