Tamalika Karmaker, the courageous and versatile diva of Bangladeshi media world is to receive an honorary award from the Bangladesh Cultural Society of North America on June 21. The “National Award” winning actress already had travel plans to visit New York on June 19 and is very contented for the respect and love bestowed on her from the expatriates.

The ceremony will take place in Oasis Restaurant, White Plains Rd, Bronx, NY. Hounourable Senator Ruben Diaz and assembly man Luis Sepúlveda will honour the event. The society has decided to bestow this respect to the gifted actress for her contribution to the theatre, TV and film of Bangladesh.

Regarding the event, the actress told Dhaka Tribune: “I had made travel plans for New York even before I knew about the event. I feel so hounoured and touched by the respectable sentiment. I love my fans, they are one of the reasons I have worked so hard to deliver and now I know for sure that I am loved and well received both at home and abroad.”

Of film, theatre and TV what is your preference?

I love acting overall. When I act, I am transported to a different realm. I get into my character and forget who I am, in reality. I am not afraid of doing roles that are controversial or daring in nature. In fact I like being faced with challenging and avant-garde characters. I am very comfortable in front of the camera as I was introduced to the ‘recording red light’ from a very young age.

Acting is my passion and there is nothing more thrilling than acting onstage with a live audience, getting response from them first-hand gives me a great thrill. It is so much more challenging to engage an audience with your performance and I am grateful that I have so far lived up to the expectations of my fans.

Talking about film, well, I am waiting eagerly for a good role. I really hope that I will get an awesome script that will be both challenging and exciting. My last film was well received and I hope in the future I will get the same response.”

In your acting career, which characters did you enjoy most?

In theatre, I loved acting in “Rarang,” the choreography of the production was done by me, “Joy Joyonti,” and “Mouyur Shinghashon.”

In TV I loved acting in Giasuddin Selim’s “Paap Punyo,” Mamunur Rashid’s “Akhteri Banu,” Alvi Ahmed’s “Putul Nacher Eti Kotha” and “Pragoitihashik.”

What are you working on recently?

I am currently involved in many projects. Among them SATV’s “Agun Poka,” Boishaki TV’s “Boro Barir Choto Bou,” and “Shonkha,” ETV’s “Ohonkar,” and I have also acted in a few episodes of ATN Bangla’s “DB.”
