NGO officer abducted from Dinajpur rescued in Lalmonirhat

An NGO officer abducted from Binnagari village in Chinirbandar upazila in Dinajpur district four months ago was rescued beside the Swarnamoti Bridge on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari Highway, at Aditmari upazila in Lalmonirhat at dawn on Saturday.

The rescued man, Mozahed Hossain, 45, was admitted to Aditmari Upazila Health Complex in critical condition, police said.

Mozahed hails from Sahospur village of Khansama upazila in Dinajpur. He is the Birol upazila branch manager of ASA in Dinajpur.

Association for Social Advancement or ASA is the largest microfinance NGO in the country.

According to police, around five to six people carried Mozahed in a microbus to the Swarnamoti bridge at dawn and left him with his hands and legs tied. Two trucks were parked beside the bridge.

Hearing Mozahed scream, truck drivers called police and they rushed in immediately. Police rescued Mozahed in critical condition and admitted him to hospital.

Aditmari Police Station officer-in-charge Aslam Iqbal said Mozahed was abducted on February 15, while heading to work.

He was kept in a locked room at an unknown location and tortured both physically and mentally.

After four months, his abductors took his signature on four blank stamp papers. Then they took him to Swarnamoti Bridge with the intention of killing him, OC Iqbal said.

“I know all the criminals who kidnapped me. They are ASA officials of Dinajpur district branch.

But I still don’t know why they abducted me,” Mozahed reportedly told the police.

OC Iqbal said police had not identified Mozahed’s kidnappers yet.

He added that police had already informed his family members of his rescue.
