Barapukuria miners end strike

Miners at the country’s lone coalfield at Barapukuria, Dinajpur on Saturday postponed their indefinite strike till June 25.

The workers went on strike last Thursday to press home their five-point demand, which include safety and security issues. Following an assurance from Mostafizur Rahman, state minister for land, the general secretary of Barapukuria Workers-Employees Union, Shafiqul Islam, called off the strike.

“The state minister has given us an assurance that he would settle our problem by discussing the matter with us, the Petrobangla chair and the managing director on June 20,” Shafiqul told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday. Earlier, in a memorandum submitted to the Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd (BCMCL) managing director, the workers threatened to go on strike unless their demands were met by Wednesday.

BCMCL Managing Director Md Aminuzzaman said, “We hope we will be able to solve the problem, terming the postponement of the strike positive.”
